Color Theater - Yellow
Is yellow a color with a unique spectrum? Is it a symbol of danger in the material world? Is it a color therapy that makes people feel happy and satisfied psychologically? The unexpectedness of its association with the privilege of royal dignity in the Chinese cultural context and its broad implications related to obscenity can be surprising. Yellow can evoke happiness, danger, satisfaction, power, nobility, and obscenity. It's a color that defies expectations.
But I prefer the famous Chinese Book of Changes, saying: "Heaven and earth are dark yellow." At the beginning of creation, the sky was black, and the earth was yellow. The surprise of seeing yellow immediately after the black exhibition is that it foreshadows the stalemate and shock of the end and the beginning. Donna Gough used pure yellow and black but did not make people feel the breath of danger. Instead, it felt like the hidden fun of spiritual games in the folding and flipping geometric blocks.
Interestingly, in her statement, she said that her hard-edge works to hide the thoughts of the dark yellow of heaven and earth in the Chinese Book of Changes. The reverse use of artist Sara Kohrt reminds me of the metaphor of the vast yellow land carrying life in Chinese culture. Young Dylan Jacobs may not have known what an inadvertent masterpiece his wrinkled handkerchief was. Brendan McEvoy reminded me of Gombrich's repeated warning: always go to the original artwork. In this yellow exhibition, I spent two days waiting for the lawyer artist Joseph to join his conceptual work: he used a yellow old-fashioned typewriter to type black words on yellowed white paper: Don't think of the color yellow.
